ESPN The Magazine Plan B Issue on Newsstands Friday

This was supposed to be The Mag’s NBA Preview Issue, but the lockout put an end to that. Over the past few months we have seen Kevin Durant become a YouTube sensation, Dwight Howard planking, LeBron James dunking on a child, and Metta World Peace doing the cha-cha-cha. Everyone needs backup plans, even magazines. So The Mag turned lockouts into lemonade, and Plan B became…an issue on Plan B’s.

The latest issue of ESPN The Magazine on newsstands Friday, October 21 features a sermon on back-up-turned-savior Tim Tebow in “Tebow 10:23,” a preview of the free agent season that could kick Albert Pujols from the Cardinals’ nest in “Agents of Change,” Al Golden’s game plan for turning around The University of Miami in “No U-Turn,” and the siren song that has lured stars like Jaromir Jagr to the KHL in “The Cold War” and “A Game of Risk.”

The Plan B Issue:

Kevin Can Wait
Thanks to viral videos of the man tearing up pickup games nationwide this summer, Durant may have earned the title of Lockout MVP – plus a lot more credibility when he gets back to tearing up NBA courts. By Allison Glock

Power to the People
Forget about the NBA and its lockout. Players could start running their own business. By Peter Keating

Who Am I and How Did I Get Here?
When a pro baller is stripped of his livelihood, it can be disorienting. We offer up a handy – if a bit challenging – quiz to help NBA stars figure out who they are minus their jerseys. By Ty Wenger

Team Baron
Absent a league to keep him tiptop, Baron Davis has turned to a village – from a physical therapist to a college prof – to keep him in NBA shape. The Mag takes a look at his crew. By Chris Palmer

Beyond the NBA and NHL:

  • What’s going on in a PGA golfer’s head as he works his way through the back nine? On a Sunday? With the possibility of losing his head?
  • Michigan QB Denard Robinson seemed like a misfit in Brady Hoke’s offense. But after a 6-0 start, no one is complaining.
  • Don’t think Harvard can be a basketball school? You’ve got another thing coming.
