World Cup Round of 16 Starts Saturday; U.S. Plays Saturday at 2 p.m. on ABC

The 2010 FIFA World Cup continues in South Africa with the Round of 16 matches starting Saturday, June 26, on ESPN and ABC with the top two finishers from each of the eight groups advancing to the next stage of competition. Following the completion of play in Groups A and B, a pair of matchups have already been determined – Uruguay vs. South Korea (Saturday at 9:30 a.m. ET on ESPN) and Argentina vs. Mexico (Sunday at 2 p.m. ABC). The U.S. and England, the top two finishers in Group C, will play the second- and first-place finishers from Group D, respectively. The U.S. match will be televised Saturday at 2 p.m. on ABC, while England will play Sunday at 9:30 a.m. on ESPN. Round of 16 matches will also be available on ESPN3.com, ESPN Radio, ESPN 3D, ESPN Mobile TV and ESPN Deportes. Commentator assignments will be announced later this week.

Washington’s rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg is expected to start when the Nationals visit the first-place Atlanta Braves and rookie All-Star candidate Jason Heyward on Monday Night Baseball on June 28 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com. Dave O’Brien will call the game with analysts Rick Sutcliffe and Aaron Boone and reporter Tim Kurkjian.
The Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre will face his former team, the New York Yankees, in an interleague matchup on Sunday Night Baseball, June 27 at 8 p.m. on ESPN, ESPN Radio, ESPN3.com and ESPN Mobile TV. Jon Miller will call the SNB telecast with analysts Joe Morgan and Orel Hershiser.
Additionally, Wednesday Night Baseball (June 30) will be televised from Puerto Rico with the New York Mets and Florida Marlins at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com. Jon Sciambi will provide play-by-play with analysts Eduardo Perez and Chris Singleton and reporter Jaime Motta. Candy Maldonado will be a guest analyst in the booth. The game will be seen on ESPN networks in Florida.
Super Bowl XLIV champion New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton will visit ESPN on Monday, June 28, to talk football and promote his new book, Home Team: Coaching the Saints and New Orleans Back to Life. Payton will appear on several ESPN television and radio programs throughout the day, including ESPN Radio and ESPN2’s Mike and Mike in the Morning, First Take (ESPN2), The Herd with Colin Cowherd (ESPN Radio/ESPNU), The Scott Van Pelt Show (ESPN Radio), NFL Live and SportsCenter.
A pair of Pro Bowl players, Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and New York Jets offensive lineman Damien Woody, will make guest appearances on NFL Live in the week ahead. Asomugha will join Marcellus Wiley Friday, June 25, at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN2 (reaired at 12:30 a.m. on ESPN) to discuss the latest NFL news, including offering his perspective on Jets’ cornerback Darrelle Revis, who requested to be paid 50 cents more than Asomugha in order to be the highest-paid cornerback in the league. Woody will join Tim Hasselbeck on Monday, June 28, at 12:30 a.m. on ESPN (reaired at 1 a.m. on ESPN2), to discuss the Jets’ high-profile offseason acquisitions and the team’s upcoming appearances on HBO’s NFL-themed reality show Hard Knocks.

ESPN filmed the 2010 Monday Night Football opening video in Nashville, Tenn., with country music legend Hank Williams Jr., who will ask fans, “Are You Ready for Some Football?” for the 22nd season. Geoff Bodine Joins Evernham, Smith on NASCAR Now Roundtable

Former NASCAR star Geoff Bodine joins analyst Ray Evernham and reporter Marty Smith on ESPN2’s NASCAR Now weekly roundtable discussion Monday, June 28, at 6 p.m. with host Allen Bestwick. The weekend edition, hosted by Mike Massaro, will air Sunday, June 27, at 8:30 a.m. with a preview of that day’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Smith and Angelique Chengelis will report from the speedway with analyst Dale Jarrett.
The 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships from Drake University will be televised live Friday, June 25, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, June 26, at 1 p.m.; and Sunday, June 27, at 1 p.m. Play-by-play announcer Dwight Stone will call the action, joined by analyst Alto Boldin and reporter Elizabeth Moreau. The five-day event (beginning today, June 23) marks the third event of the 2010 USATF Outdoors Visa Championship series where athletes compete for cash, prizes and valuable points. The 2010 GEICO PBA Team Shootout hosted by Six Flags will air on ESPN in a four-part series on ESPN, beginning Sunday, June 27, at 2:30 p.m. The fourth annual summer event will feature the PBA’s top stars on specially constructed lanes at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J. GEICO Team Shootout telecasts will continue Saturday, July 3, at 2 p.m.; Sunday, July 4, at 1 p.m., and Sunday, July 11, at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN.
Scott Guglielmino, a 17-year ESPN veteran who has played a vital role in ESPN's companywide efforts on the 2010 FIFA World Cup, has been promoted to senior vice president, programming and Global X. In his new position, Guglielmino will be responsible for all aspects of the Global X franchise and will continue to oversee the company's U.S. soccer strategy. In addition, Julie Sobieski, vice president, programming & acquisitions, adds oversight of Major League Baseball in addition to continued responsibility for motorsports; and Leah LaPlaca, vice president, programming & acquisitions, adds the NBA to her duties on NFL, golf and content rights management.
