John Barr
John Barr joined ESPN in June 2003 as an Atlanta-based reporter for ESPN’s news-gathering operation, particularly SportsCenter, Outside the Lines and ESPNEWS. Currently based in Philadelphia, his responsibilities include covering breaking news stories and major events, as well as providing investigative pieces and human-interest features. Barr also contributes taped-web segments for ESPN.com.
Prior to joining ESPN, Barr served as a reporter for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul (1999-2002); WBFF-TV in Baltimore (1997-1999); WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, Pa. (1995-1997); WTHI-TV in Terre Haute, Ind. (1993-1995); TV-43 in Hopkinsville, Ky. (1992-1993); and WFIU-FM in Bloomington, Ind. (1990-1992). From 2002-2003, he operated his own production company, producing and reporting shows and segments primarily for The National Geographic Channel and Court TV.
Barr has received a National Edward R. Murrow Award for Feature Reporting and eight Regional Emmy Awards for various local news stories. He has also been honored several times by the Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists, and numerous other state broadcasting associations for work in local news.
A native of London, Ontario, Canada, Barr was graduated from Indiana University with a masters degree in journalism in 1992, and from the University of Toronto in 1989 with a bachelor of arts degree in history/political science.
